Goatskin Watch Straps: Alran Chèvre Sully Explained

A goatskin watch strap is made from goat leather, which is typically valued for being light and strong for its weight, with a fine, visible natural grain. Cernir's goatskin straps use Chevre Sully from Alran, a French tannery known for its goatskins. If you searched for an Alran strap or a chèvre watch strap, this is the leather we mean.

In our straps, Chevre Sully feels thin and comfortable and needs little breaking in. Below we explain what chèvre and Sully mean, how goatskin compares with calfskin on the wrist, how ours wears and how to care for it, and which watches we find it suits.

What chèvre and Sully mean

Chèvre is French for goat, and in leather the word is used for goatskin. Chèvre Sully is the name Alran gives to this particular goatskin article. We keep the tannery's own name so you can see exactly what the strap is made from. We have no documentation on the origin of the word Sully, so we will not guess at it.

Alran is a French tannery that specialises in goatskin. When the hides reach our Da Nang workshop, each one is checked by hand for consistent grain and colour before cutting.

The surface is the goat's own grain, finely boarded. Boarding is a finishing step in which the leather is folded and rolled under pressure to bring up its natural grain. It differs from embossing, where a plate presses a pattern into the surface. Over the grain sits a pigmented finish, which gives the leather its even colour.

Goatskin vs calfskin on a watch strap

Both are widely used for watch straps, and the difference is easier to see than to feel. Calfskin typically has a tighter, smoother-looking grain. Goatskin tends to show more of its natural grain, a fine pattern of small creases and pebbles that varies a little across the hide.

Alran describes Chevre Sully as firm, with a full hand. Skived and lined in our straps, it feels thin and comfortable on the wrist, and in our experience it needs little breaking in. Compared with the calfskins we use:

  • Epsom and Saffiano. In our straps, Chevre Sully feels softer from the first wear than either of these firmer, embossed calfskins.
  • Togo. Both are comfortable from the start, but the look differs. Visually, we find Chevre Sully's finer, flatter grain looks neater and dressier, while the large pebbles of our Togo leather look more relaxed.

How any strap feels also depends on its thickness, reinforcement, length and the shape of your wrist, so treat these as our observations on the straps we make.

How Chevre Sully wears

The pigmented grain can make light marks less noticeable, though it cannot prevent cuts or damage from sharp objects. Chevre Sully held its colour in our tests on finished straps, and its fine grain remains its defining feature. Compared with uncoated vegetable-tanned leather, its pigmented or finished surface usually shows less dramatic darkening and tonal change. It will still show signs of wear over time.

The strap is not waterproof. Wipe off moisture promptly and let it dry naturally at room temperature, and never soak it.

Underneath the goatskin is the same Four-Layer Construction we use across our range, with a reinforcement layer to hold the shape and limit stretching, strengthened spring bar ends and a soft Zermatt calfskin lining from Tanneries Haas. These Slim straps are stitched, and our stitched straps are saddle stitched by hand; each cut edge is sanded, sealed and painted.

There are trade-offs. A thin, soft strap carries less visual weight, and on a large or chunky watch we find it can look slight next to the case. If you want a strap whose colour and sheen change noticeably as you wear it, a vegetable-tanned leather will suit you better.

Which watches suit a goatskin strap

These are styling suggestions, and your own taste should decide. We find Chevre Sully suits dress watches and smaller cases particularly well. Our goatskin straps are made in the Slim style, 2.5mm at the lugs tapering to 1.8mm at the tail, which keeps a thin case looking neat.

  • Classic shades. Black, navy blue and golden brown are the quiet everyday choices. Visually, we find golden brown warms up a cream or white dial.
  • Greys and taupe. Grey, light grey and taupe sit easily with steel cases and silver or blue dials.
  • Reds. Red, burgundy and bordeaux add colour. To our eye the darker two pair well with gold-tone cases.
  • White. A white strap makes a light, summery statement and suits a white or pale dial.

If your watch has an unusual lug width, our custom watch strap builder makes any lug width from 10 to 30mm and buckle width from 10 to 24mm. Check your lug width first.

Caring for a goatskin watch strap

  • Clean it with a soft cloth, dry or very slightly damp.
  • If it gets wet, blot it and let it dry at room temperature, away from hair dryers, direct heat and strong sun. Never soak it.
  • Do not use alcohol wipes, hand sanitiser, solvents or household cleaners on it.
  • Conditioner is rarely needed on a pigmented finish. If you do use one, test it on a hidden area first and accept that it may darken the leather or change the finish.
  • Rotate straps so moisture can dissipate.

Frequently asked questions

What is Alran Chevre Sully?

It is a goatskin made by Alran, a French tannery that specialises in goat leather. Chèvre Sully is the tannery's own name for this article, which has a finely boarded natural grain and a pigmented finish.

Is goatskin good for a watch strap?

Goatskin is typically light and strong for its weight. In our straps, Chevre Sully feels thin and comfortable from the first wear. Like any leather strap, it is not waterproof, so wipe off moisture promptly.

Is a goatskin strap softer than calfskin?

It depends on the leathers being compared and on how the strap is built. On our straps, Chevre Sully feels softer than our Epsom and Saffiano calfskins and is closer to our Togo.

Does a goat leather watch strap need breaking in?

In our experience, very little. Our Chevre Sully straps are comfortable from the first wear, though any strap settles a little to your wrist over time.
