What is shell cordovan?

Shell cordovan comes from a dense layer of fibres beneath the hide of a horse's hindquarters. Each hide yields only two small shells, and the leather is tanned and finished slowly, which is why it is rare and prized.

How it wears

Cordovan tends to form soft rolls where it bends rather than fine creases, and in our experience its surface builds a deeper shine over time.

Caring for shell cordovan

Wipe it with a soft cloth. Water can leave small raised spots; if that happens, let it dry and buff the surface gently with a cloth.

Find your size

Our standard straps are made to order in lug widths from 16 to 24mm, and any other lug width can be made through our custom builder. The buckle is never wider than the lug. See our lug width guide and strap size guide.

Frequently asked questions

Why is shell cordovan more expensive?

Each horse hide yields only two small shells, and tanning takes much longer than for regular leather, so supply is limited.

Does shell cordovan crease?

It forms gentle rolls rather than sharp creases, which keeps the strap looking clean for years.

How long does a made-to-order strap take?

We make each strap in 3–7 business days. Free standard shipping then takes 7–10 business days to the US and 10–15 business days to most other countries.
