Rembordé Watch Straps: What a Folded Edge Is and Who It Suits
A rembordé watch strap, also called a folded edge watch strap, has its outer leather folded around the sides instead of cut flush and finished with edge paint. Rembordé is a French leatherworking term for an edge that has been skived, folded over and secured. Seen from the side, the strap shows smooth leather where a cut strap shows its layers.
At Cernir we make rembordé straps in Togo, Epsom, Alran Chevre Sully goatskin and alligator, to order, in any lug width from 10mm to 30mm. This guide explains how the edge is made, how it looks and wears compared with a painted edge, and how to order one.
How a folded edge is made
On our rembordé straps the outer leather is cut wider than the finished strap and thinned along its sides. That thinned margin is then wrapped around the edge and secured beneath the lining, so the cut edge of the outer leather ends up hidden on the underside. The lining, a soft Zermatt calfskin from Tanneries Haas, closes the back of the strap as it does on our other straps.

Thinning the leather is the delicate part. Too thick, and the fold sits lumpy and stiff; too thin, and the leather can lose strength at the edge. Getting an even, rounded fold along a tapering strap with curved ends is slow handwork, which is one reason folded edges usually cost more than painted ones. In our builder, the price difference is shown on the Folded Edges option.
How it looks and feels on the wrist
A folded edge gives the strap a rounded, cushioned outline with the colour and grain of the leather carried right over the side. Compared with a painted edge, it reads as softer and fuller, and there is no separate edge colour to match or contrast. Visually, we find it suits dress watches and quieter designs, where a crisp painted line can look more technical than the watch.

The fold also changes how the edge meets the skin. With no cut edge on the outside, the sides of the strap are smooth to the touch, which we find is most noticeable under a shirt cuff. Thickness is not set by the edge: a rembordé strap follows the style you choose, so a Slim strap stays slim and a Padded strap keeps its raised centre. Our Taupe Togo padded folded-edge strap, for example, is 4.5mm thick at the lugs and tapers to 2.0mm.
Rembordé or painted edge?
Neither is better in every case. A painted edge gives a sharp, precise outline and works on almost any leather, and you can choose a tone-on-tone or contrasting colour. A folded edge gives a rounded, seamless look in the leather's own colour. Our article on edge painting on leather watch straps covers the painted side in detail.
| Rembordé (folded) | Painted | |

How a folded edge ages
A folded edge has no paint layer to crack, but it is not immune to wear. The fold rubs against cuffs, desks and the keeper, so it is often where wear first becomes visible, as light scuffing, flattening or a slightly lighter tone. How soon that happens depends on the leather, the colour and how often the strap is worn.
The same basic precautions apply as with our other leather straps: it is not waterproof, so wipe off moisture promptly, let it dry naturally at room temperature, and avoid solvents and household cleaners. Our leather strap care guide has the details.
How to order a rembordé strap
Choose Folded Edges in our custom strap builder, then pick the leather, colour, size and other options there. Folded edges cannot be combined with a pilot tip. Free initials of up to 10 characters on the lining are available on rembordé straps, and each strap comes with a stainless steel pin buckle, or you can choose our butterfly clasp as an add-on. We make each strap in 3 to 7 business days. If you are unsure of your size, start with our watch strap sizing guide.
Frequently asked questions
What does rembordé mean on a watch strap?
It means the outer leather is folded around the sides of the strap rather than cut and painted, so no cut edge shows from the outside.
Which leathers can I order with folded edges?
We make rembordé straps in Togo, Epsom, Alran Chevre Sully goatskin and alligator. Choose the leather in the custom builder after selecting Folded Edges.
Is a folded edge stronger than a painted edge?
Not as a rule. The two wear differently: paint is a surface coating that may gradually thin at repeated flex points, while a folded edge shows wear along the fold. How long either lasts depends on the leather and how the strap is used.
Can a rembordé strap be made thin?
Yes. The edge does not set the thickness. A rembordé strap follows the style you choose, such as our Slim or Padded style.
