Cartier Leather Strap: A Guide for the Tank and Santos
A Cartier leather strap suits the watch's dress-watch roots, and changing it is one of the easiest ways to give a Tank or Santos a new look. A slim, finely grained calfskin keeps a Tank neat and close to the wrist, while a Santos can carry a little more texture. Before choosing a colour, check how your watch attaches its strap and measure the space between the lugs, because both vary across Cartier's range.
Below we cover the attachment and size checks, the strap we have photographed on the Tank, leather ideas for the Santos, and the buckle options. Cernir is an independent strap maker and is not affiliated with Cartier.
Check how your Cartier attaches its strap
Our straps fit watches that hold the strap with a spring bar between two lugs. Many Cartier watches do, but many recent Santos de Cartier models use Cartier's own quick-change system to attach straps and bracelets instead. A standard spring-bar strap will not fit that attachment, so look at how your current strap is fixed before ordering.
Where your watch does use spring bars, the lug width, the spring-bar diameter and the clearance between the spring bar and the case all need to suit the strap. Every Cernir strap comes with two quick-release spring bars fitted; confirm that they seat securely in your watch, and if either end does not engage fully, do not wear it. If you are unsure, contact us with a photo of the lugs.
Choosing a leather strap for a Cartier Tank

The Tank's flat, rectangular case sits low on the wrist, and visually we find it looks most balanced on a slim strap that does not stand taller than the case. In the photo above, three Tank watches in different sizes wear our Dark Navy Epsom Leather Slim Watch Strap. The navy echoes the blue stones on the crowns, and the cream stitching picks up the white dials and black Roman numerals.
The photo also shows how much the strap width changes with the case: the smaller the Tank, the narrower the strap at the lugs. That is why it pays to measure your own watch rather than rely on a figure for another size.
For colour, navy, black, burgundy and taupe all suit a white Tank dial. The Epsom calfskin we use comes from Tanneries Haas in France, and its firm, embossed surface keeps the strap's outline crisp. For the most formal look, alligator suits the Tank's evening character; browse our alligator leather watch straps.
Leather ideas for a Cartier Santos
We have not photographed a Santos yet. Its square case, exposed screws and sportier stance can take a strap with more texture than a Tank, such as pebbled Togo calfskin or a smooth vegetable-tanned leather in tan or brown. On a larger Santos, a padded strap adds body that visually balances the case; on a smaller one, a slim strap keeps it elegant. Check the attachment first, as described above.
Pin buckle or butterfly clasp
Every Cernir strap comes with a stainless steel pin buckle in silver, yellow gold, rose gold or black, at the same price, so you can match a steel, yellow gold or rose gold case. If you prefer a deployant closure, you can order our stainless steel butterfly clasp as an add-on in even widths from 10mm to 22mm; our article on the butterfly clasp vs pin buckle explains the trade-offs.
Getting the size right
Measure the distance between the lugs with a ruler or callipers, then choose that lug width; our lug width guide shows how. We make every strap to order in lug widths from 10mm to 30mm and buckle widths from 10mm to 24mm, in any combination within those ranges, in 3 to 7 business days.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put a leather strap on my Cartier?
If your watch holds its strap with spring bars between the lugs, usually yes, provided the lug width, spring-bar diameter and clearance suit the strap. Watches that use Cartier's own quick-change attachment need a strap made for that system.
What size strap does a Cartier Tank take?
It depends on the model and case size, so measure the lug width of your own watch rather than relying on a figure quoted for another Tank.
Which leather suits a Cartier Tank?
We like a slim, finely grained calfskin such as Epsom in navy, black, burgundy or taupe, or alligator for a more formal look.
Can I wear a leather strap in water?
No. Leather straps are not made for water: repeated soaking can mark the leather and damage the lining. If yours gets wet, wipe it promptly and let it dry at room temperature.
